Ask My E.T.

Teaching large classes makes it hard for me to spend enough time on individual students.  I can definitely understand some of my students' frustrations when they can't keep up in class.  Since I don't have any office hours, my blog is probably the next best thing.  As a teacher, I get discouraged and depressed when students start giving up on English; therefore, I'd like people to utilize this blog to ask as many questions as possible.  If I have failed to explain a vocabulary or a specific sentence structure in my handouts, please feel free to leave a question for me.  I'd encourage my students to use English in this forum, but you may use Chinese when it is necessary.  You are welcomed to ask me any English-related questions.

  • Vocabulary Usage

    1. The word tendency means 傾向。 People who grow up in stressful homes often have
    violent tendencies.

    2. The term American spirit refers to perseverance 堅忍不拔的精神。

    3. We usually don't use the phrasal verb "slip in" for videos. We use pop in instead.

    4. Fickle is an adjective. It means that a person only retains his or her interest for a
    very short time. 多變或喜新厭舊.

    5. Teletubbies are 天線寶寶. It was originally aired on PBS in the states. It became
popular around the world in a very short amount of time.

  • I want to study the more US's place slangs what to know their manners and customs.
To later, if must go abroad studies away from home can have the help very much.

    Thank you!
  • The best way to learn American slangs and customs is to befriend someone from the states. If you want a penpal, I can hook you up with my cousin. She is about your age and she is interesting in learning Chinese. You can teach her a couple of Chinese words per day and vise versa. Let me know when you are ready.

  • Hi,Jason
What different among following words ?
    sedate,equanimity,and serenity.

And could you explain this sentence for me ?

These people are moved by strong feelings that are not compatible with the serenity of the world around them.

    Thanks.
  • The word sedate is mostly used in hospitals. Doctors would have to sedate a patient before an operation.

Equanimity refers to the manner in which a person handles a crisis. He or she does not panic or lose their composure in a stressful situation. Here is a sample sentence: Cicenly dealt with the company's PR crisis with equanimity. Please note that most Americans I know would use the word poise instead of equanimity.

Serenity may be used to describe how a person feels at a particular moment. This word often appears in advertisements for a vacation resort. When you are in a mountain resort, you will enjoy complete serenity. The adjective serene is more often used than the noun.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to submit follow-up questions.

I'd like to stress that my nimbleness, coupled with my can-do attitude, will enable me to fulfill my duties as an intern.

    -----------------------------------------------------

Please think about what I wrote on the board last week. It is important for students to organize their thoughts before committing to paper (or start typing). What specific skills do you need to perform this job well? What does your experience as a camp leader have to do with the internship or the job you are seeking? Try to make logical links between the two, and you will have a very persuasive cover letter. Use the words we've learned in class. I believe you have potential that hasn't been realized.

After reading your advertisement in today’s Apple Daily News, I would like to apply for the position of Sales Manager assistant in your office. This sounds like an opportunity that is very much in keeping with my career objective.

My name is Yvonne. I am 20 years of age and studying in the Department of International Trade at Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan.

I am confident and capable of meeting your special requirements. I have been the leader of my class in school. The days of being this class’s leader really brings me a lot. Besides, I have a good sense of responsibility and always try to get things done perfectly. I also have good computer operation skill, and international trade practice…etc.

Though I have no actual experience in office work, I believe that I have sufficient confidence and can perform the tasks mentioned skillfully and effectively. I am enterprising and industrious. I hope that I many have the pleasure of an interview at a time most convenient for you, and I sincerely hope I will have an opportunity of seeing you and proving my words. Thank You!

    Thank you :)
  • (1) The correct title should be Assistant Sales Manager.
    (2) What do you know about the company and its product?
    (3) What have you accomplished as a class leader? Be specific.
    (4) What computer skills do you possess? How are the skills related
    to this particular job?

I can see that you've made an effort to incorporate the vocabulary we've learned in class; however, you've made a typical mistake by failing to support your claims with evidence. A strong cover letter requires proof. Please refer to the notes you may or may not have taken in class. If you can use the "power verbs" I taught you last week, that would be icing on the cake. Please send me a revised version before our next class.

    Cover letter

    Dear Mr. Wright

As an avid loyal audience, I can’t imagine a better internship in Discovery than sharing my enthusiasm and gaining worldly perspective. Upon review of your ad, I’m confident that I can bring refreshing changes to this intern.

As a student I gave every subject my fullest effort. “Time control, or controlled by time.” I draw up a plan to effective control of every moment and keep a record to make sure I’m improving every day. Over the past years I got some certification in Computer Software, Accounting Affair and International Trade Management.

Two years ago, I actively participated in English summer camp. This experience motivates me to work on English every day. There is an insatiable drive to get ahead. Once I set a goal for myself, I will do everything in my power to achieve those goals. With this attitude, I can fulfill my duties as an intern.

"There is nothing I can’t do until you work on it every day" I believe that my ability to be persistent, ambitious will convince you that I am perfect for this position. If this “fervent letter” didn’t persuade you, please tell me then I can make it better next time.

    Sincerely,

    Cicenly

  • (1) As an avid viewer of the Discovery Channel, I can't imagine a better internship than the one you are offering at the Washington office.

    (2) You mentioned in your opening statement that you would be able to bring refreshing changes to this internship position; therefore, it is absolutely vital that you follow up with supporting statements. What type of knowledge or skills would the intern need to possess? What exactly can you bring to this position? Please use specific examples. You may quote the classified advertisement or offer your opinion on an issue that is important to the organiation.

    (3) A quote can not pop out of nowhere. Here is what you can write instead: As the famous saying goes, "Control time, or be controlled by time."

    (4) Pay attention to the proper usage of Adverbs in your writing. For example: I can effectively control every minute of my busy life.

    * Please repost this cover letter in the correct forum. As always, I am proud of the progress you have made.

    Hello Jason,
